SOLDIER OF FORTUNE 1 COMMUNITY EDITION 6.2 PC
Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition is the resurrection of an old favorite of mine from the PC world. The time taken to start levels can be a bit slow, but this isn't really a problem - we're just used to being spoilt by other games. There's a plethora of other tweaks too, from simple bug fixes to gameplay niceties that just add to the fun. The experience is further improved by the addition of six new player skins and even the presently unfashionable single-player mode is treated to enhanced bot Al, which makes crippling the enemy before killing them even more satisfying. These can also be played in the already familiar DM styles too, adding a lot more variety to the game.
SOLDIER OF FORTUNE 1 COMMUNITY EDITION 6.2 UPDATE
The bulk of the update is taken up by no less than 18 new multiplayer maps, which cover the two new Deathmatch modes - Control and Conquer The Bunker. It's not that you have to be a twisted sicko to like this game, but it certainly helps. It hasn't quite dragged the gore levels up to those of an abattoir, but no doubt hundreds of inbred gung-ho firearm maniacs in the US will be inspired by it before they nip out for a spot of animal molesting. The team has been beavering away and has come up with a worthwhile update. Ravensoft has now unveiled the Gold Edition patch, and for UK fans of the game who won't be treated to the special boxed edition it's a must. We gave it a very respectable 80 per cent and then hurried down to church to pray it hadn't tainted our mortal souls. It was all good unwholesome fun, and not surprisingly many FPS fans lapped it up. Look for some good performances by Michael Rennie as the British inspector, Alexander D'Arcy as a conniving French rogue and Tom Tully as a slimy influence peddler. What they came up with, however, wasn't particularly true to life in terms of looks - the venerable Quake 2 engine just isn't that good - but it was teeth-clenchingly gruesome in the way that limbs separated from bodies, blood splattered in all directions and the wounded moaned in agony as their lives seeped away before our eyes.
Soldier of Fortune has a good cast of character actors.
SOLDIER OF FORTUNE 1 COMMUNITY EDITION 6.2 PLUS
Plus the fact it was done on location as opposed to the backlot of 20th Century Fox. The class of the players make it seem more than it is.
Soldier of Fortune isn't a bad film, hardly the worst thing either of them did, but in essence it's really a souped up Grade B adventure saga. I would have hoped that with the one and only teaming of Gable and Hayward a better story could have been found. Gable's more interested in her, but helping the husband's rescue is a package deal. Hayward's in Hong Kong to try and affect a rescue and she comes up against some unscrupulous types including Gable.
Hayward's husband Gene Barry is a prisoner of the Chinese government, apparently having taken some pictures he shouldn't have as a freelance photo journalist. Unlike the William Holden- Jennifer Jones epic, Soldier of Fortune leans more to adventure and intrigue than romance. This was the second big epic film they shot in Hong Kong that year, the other being Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. 20th Century Fox did right by him, gave him a film to shoot on location in Hong Kong and an actress who was at the height of her career as a new leading lady in Susan Hayward. Soldier of Fortune marked Clark Gable's first film away from MGM after his contract was not renewed.
